Hi, All!

I have read a few things about the use of a grounding device in the tank.

Some say, if there is a small electric leak to the tank the grounding probe will conduct the electric through the fish and kill the fish.

But, without the probe the fish will be fine, but beware of sticking your hands in that tank!

So, what to do?

Thanks,
Joe

Install a GFCI on your tank line.

It is a MUST for any saltwater tank. Buy the new ones with the light.

Research GFCI, you'll find a lot of info. Here's the highlights: you should have BOTH a GFCI outlet and a grounding probe. The grounding probe is nothing but a metal tip in the water connected to the ground in your electrical system. If you put your hand in the water with voltage, and you don't have a grounding probe, you'll land on your @ on the other side of the room. Also, if you have powerheads that leak voltage, the probe will let this escape.

The GFCI is highly important and is used in conjunction with the probe.

GFCI's are a must. I'm still not sold on the use of grounding probes though. If you do a search on them you'll find some lengthy debates.
