View Full Version : Cure time for PVC joints?

I glued up some PVC for a filter intake & exhaust into one of my tanks. How long do I have to wait till I can use it?
It's been 4 days & the pipes still smell pretty strong of glue. I've also tried soaking them in hot water hoping that would help.
Any suggestions are always welcome.

usually dries in about 1hr for me! What glue are you using?

I used regular/clear PVC cement made by Oatey. The bottle says cure time of 2 hours above 60f, good for potable water, drain & sewer.

Should be plenty fine by now. If it makes you feel more comfortable, run fresh water through it for a coupla hours to cleanse any smell & particulate matter out. It's a good idea to do this anyway so you can double check for leaks. Assuming no leaks, get rid of that water and then you're ready to go.

ive found i only get a smell for more then 24 hours if im using glue that is old and got a little jelly like in the can

run carbon for a while, that will take out any voliatile organic compounds that find their way into the water.

i dont think pvc glue is organic

i dont know i would just imagine there are chemicals in that glue that are not organic

THF (tetrahydrafuran) = OCH2 CH2 CH2 CH2 :)

Hey James, a little OT here but what kind of tanks do you keep your jellyfish in? What shape I mean?

Don't keep them anymore, quit keeping animals altogether a couple of months ago. But, I kept them in kreisels, pseudokreisels, and I kept Cassiopeia in a flat, shallow tank.

This was actually one of my small office display tanks until one of my customers wanted it.
