sand filters on reefs?

i am trying to create a growing tank, a 30 breeder and i came across filteration concerns... and i have one of these laying around, how do you feel about them? also what skimmers are the best for hang on purposes?

The sand filter would probably just generate another source of nitrate since its bacteria population would be aerobic(sp?). If you ran a large refugium with a deep sand bed, you'd be able to remove nitrates.

I'm not sure about other hang-on skimmers, but for a small tank, the cpr bakpak is okay - especially if the tank doesn't house fish.
