I'm currently plumbing a maxijet 1200 to my 18 gallon with a SQWD device. For height reasons I was thinking about putting a ball valve on the intake line before the pump. Is this acceptable? Wouldn't it just be like having it after? let me know soon, I'm plumbing tonight. Thanks

I dont think a maxi can be placed in-line. Try a mini mag or mag 1. Why would you put a ball valve in the intake, we place them on the out take so we can regulate the flows.

Why would you need a ballvalve at all? The MaxiJet 1200 puts out 295gph IIRC, and the SCWD will reduce that by 20%.

I thought that I'd be able to regulate the flow by adjusting the ball valve on the intake which would limit the amount of water it wouild suck in. I don't think I'm going to do it anymore... but I wanted to know that I'd have the option to tune it after it's all setup.

BTW, Maxi-jets can be placed inline.

Yes, MJ can be placed inline, but you really need to use clamp to make sure the hose does not come off. Many people use it on calcium reactor's recirculation pump, for example.

It is almost always better to put the ball valve after the output because your way (on the intake) will cause cavitation, and shorten the life of the pump.

okay, I put the valve after the pump and now the pump seems to be drawing in air and de-priming the pump. I'm pretty sure the leak is by the intake/outake cover. can I just JB weld the entire cover or does it need this opening to draw water in for cooling?
