Ball valve on intake?

I'm currently plumbing a maxijet 1200 to my 18 gallon with a SQWD device. For height reasons I was thinking about putting a ball valve on the intake line before the pump. Is this acceptable? Wouldn't it just be like having it after? let me know soon, I'm plumbing tonight. Thanks

Nope, not acceptable. Restricting intake on any pump puts a great deal of strain on the pump, can cause cavitation and other hell. It is perfectly fine to restrict a pumps output, to a reasonable degree.
