I'm in the process of putting together my first refugium. Any reccomondations on substrate to go along with live rock and macro algea? I don't really want to spend the $$ on miracle mud. Can I just pull some sand from my main tank. I also have seen the Kent Minearal Mud, which is substantionaly cheaper then the Miracle. Perhaps a mix of that with my sand (it's southdown)? Any input would be helpful. Thanks!:)

Do a search. Someone a day ago asked the same question. It should help answer your question.

You can go with almost any kind of substrate for your fuge. The thing is, each kind will promote different things. "A course will halp grow amphipods, a medium to fine substrate will grow smaller live plankton such as copepods. A deep sugar fine substrate will enhance denitification." ( I got this info from The book Of CORAL Propogation by Anthony Calfo. Gotta give credit ;))
