View Full Version : check out this wave maker
its in the columbus zoo discovery reef tank. its about 36" in diameter (guessing) and attached to an oil well rig up in the rafters. the rig bobs the up and down in the tube surging the water. its pretty cool.

Wow! That's very cool. Do you have more pictures George?
Thanks,

i have something similar in my reef tank (on a smaller scale obviously). It was made quiet simply out of a bar-b-cue rotisserie and a teflon ball. Gives a great natural movement to the corals in my opinion.
can you get a pic of it? I would like to see what you came up with

Isn't it similar to what a wave2k essentially is???
yup pretty much. i think this giant thing more or less pulls and returns from the bottom of the outer tube.

I will try to get a pic of it as soon as i am back on dry land. But, in the meantime if you want to see what effect a "plunger" can have on your tank (coral movement especially) get a jug or jar and place it under the water and slowly move it up and down without breaking the surface of the water (less mess this way). You will notice the corals as far as 10 foot away realistically waving in the tank.
I think it looks very natural.

HI I am new to the Columbus area, and apparently just missed a nice opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at a large setup.
Sorry to hi jack your thread, but is there a Columbus area reef keepers club or local hang out? would like to get involved locally
but having trouble finding poeple.

Boosta,
Definitley post some pics and some more details.
Holy cow!! A bag of IO that treats 4000 gal!?!? I wonder how much THAT would cost at the neighborhood LFS. A bag like that would last forever doing water changes on my 10g nano!
OK, you all know I just had to do the calculations.
At the rate of a 1 gallon water change every week (10% for my tiny tank), a bag that big would last me 76.9 years!!! I'll be nano-reefing from beyond the grave! Woo Hoo!
