Hi everyone, need some help with this issue.

I wanted to add fresh oyster shells I cleaned and am currently soaking in a bucket with tank saltwater. Will it be safe to add to my tank, and will it decompose? Thanks in advance for the help.

Oyster shells are fine in our tank. I use the shells to attach corals to. If you leave bits of oyster on it, your tank creatures should be able to take care of it. Treat oyster shells like live rock. There will be some animals on the shell that may have died and may cause problem if you added a large amount in a small tank.

Thank you for the info, I boiled the shells for 10 min, them rinsed them with cool water, is it safe to add them in the tank now?

Thanks,
Mike

It is save in your tank. However, I think boiling is is not needed. Our tank is full of bacterial (including some rather nasty pathogen) and other animals. A few more from the shell is fine, if not good for the diversity of our tank.
