I've been trying to do some research and find old threads, but I'm coming up with very little. As the title of the post says, I'm interested in seeing some basement sumps using a Rubbermaid stock tank to get some different ideas as to how people have set them up, plumbed the inflow/outflow, plumbed skimmer, Ca reactor, etc.

Mine is the same concept, I saw Ken's when getting some frags and once i had the space had to do it.

How did you guys handle the water coming down from the main tank (e.g. do you just let it spill in or do you have some sort of baffle/containment for it)?

Mine is set up with only one return pump
I use gravity for the rest the water come from one overflow into the frag vat then into the sump then refugia then back up

The other overflow spills directly into the sump with the skimmer

All I did at the end is a 90 so it flow into the tank and not the bottom

The picture you see had a 55g and 20g gallon gravity fed inline but I have since removed them

Couple of pictures and a few details of my setup for you. These pictures were taken a while ago when it wasn't completely finished. The two 20g long tanks are refugiums that I had just setup, and the empty tank in the foreground will be the frag tank.

I have two 1.5" drain lines from the display tank to the sump, which dumps directly into a Instant Ocean bucket that's sitting in the sump. It's worked great for me, never had any microbubble problems at all in the display tank. And then two 1.5" drains from the sump feed a Sequence 5800 return pump. The 5800 runs the whole show from there, including the refugiums, skimmer, inline heater, calcium reactor, and of course the display tank. It's finally maxed out so I plan to feed the frag tank using the drain lines from the display tank.

Here's my setup of 3 Tuff Tubs (110g each). Top one is my fuge, middle one is for frags and bottom one is for equipment.

I used a 100 gallon rubbermade tub as a sump for each of my systems. I also used old salt containers to eliminate micro bubbles from entering the main tanks. I have dual 1" lines coming from the tank. I then have a 1 1/2" return with a Dolphin ampmaster 3000 pump.

Well, here is mine. Not as nice and decent as some of the ones above,, but it works just fine for me.
The overflow goes into the refugium to the left. It can be isolated too if I wanted to and would go right into the sump which is to the right. The refugium then dumps into the sump by gravity. The 55g drum to the right is the water top off. The one in the middle of the room is for the every 7-10 days water changes. Actually, that is wishfull thinking since it turns really into once per months:D :D
