View Full Version : Is this a myth
Books write that direct sunlight will have a negitive impact, mytank ran for almost a year and no temp flux and no aglea out breaks. My tank did acumulate a slight green colour in the back side of the tank in the sediments but it was not visible from the front

So, what's the question? There are many myths floating around this hobby. See Eric's articles in Reefkeeping magazine.

Light is light. I believe the sun was generating it long before we invented lightbulbs.
Yes it can heat your tank, but in your case that was not an issue.
I grew great algae under 250w metal halides
If it works for you, don't sweat what the books say.

The issue may be mostly that you can't really control it.
If it's causing algae outbreaks, the sunlight is not your main issue.
I have had tanks get morning or evening sun with no apparent negative effects - though I had no control set up ;).
I think it's largely a myth.

Read Anthony Calfo's book, "The Book of Coral Propagation." He describes his multi-year efforts at growing coral in 5000G of tanks in a greenhouse under direct sunlight. As was indicated, this is how our inverts grow in the wild! With enough nutrient export, and efficient herbivores, sun should be a GOOD thing for our tanks...
