I read or heard somewhere once, something about certain fish having growth inhibiting hormones.

Heres the premis:
Certain fish secrete a hormone that, when built up in concentration in their surrounding water, slows or stops that fish's growth.

It seem logical when you look at the fact that my damsel has grown from under 1/2 inch to almost 4-1/2 inches in one year, surpassing the size of my tang, who has barely grown at all in two years.

The same in fresh water; I've never seen a gourami grow to full size in a smaller tank, but an oscar would certainly be bumping the sides of a 10 gallon within six months.

Is there any truth to this hormone thing, or is it complete B.S.?
