I'm looking to purchase a game console this x-mas for my son. He wants one of them. There are only 2 brands he looked at The Xbox & the playstation 2. Which is better? Or is it just personal preference. The Xbox comes with 2 games the PS2 doesn't. The price is the same. Is it worth buying a used one from a Store?

Both are good systems, IMO the X-Box has more potential and is more "advanced" than the the PS2. However, the PS2 has a lot of games. Both offer online play, which is pretty cool.I think he would be happy with either one, it really comes down to what games he wants to play.

I bought the PS2 tonight. I hope he likes it there was a game called Jax & (something I forgot). The salesguy told me my 7 yr. old could handle that one. They tried to sell me a memory card & network stuff but I just got the extra controller for 2 player games.
Thanks for the input! ;)

You should get the memory card so he can save his game. Otherwise he will have to start over again every time he plays.

I like the PS2. I don't know about X-box but PS2 plays DVDs. I don't know what other games you planned to buy for him. Ratchet and Clank is great game. I like Kingdom Hearts ( it looks like a kiddie game but is great. I am 20 and I have played it for over 150 hours ;) Disney meets Anime in the form of Final Fantasy). Though Ratchet and Clank is a big weapons game , both games I mentioned are low violence (plus for parents).

Goodluck I'm sure he'll like it!

Actually in a way, it's best to get a kid what his friends have, trading games saves a LOT of money, lets them play at each others houses, and gives them lots to talk about. I think you made the right choice. I prefer PC games over anything. Some of the games I play on my PC can even have my own face as the player, or new levels created by users.....memory isn't as fast, but a good PC can handle most of what they have out so far.

Both are great. 've got the PS2 and love it. Even though they say it doesn't have the graphics of the X-Box, I think the graphics with it are awsome. The PS2 has many more games out than the X-Box, although, I hear the X-Box is going to start getting more games available for it.

ps2 and xbox are both coming out with new systems...whats funny is the sony system is called psx.... it has the same specs as the xbox has now.... so to answer your question I would say xbox all the way!!!

I had gamecube, xbox and ps2.....sold the other 2 and kept my xbox.

PSX is actually just a beefed up PS2 that is $1000+ dollars.
You would have made the right decision with either the xbox or ps2. I would recommend that you buy a memory card though, and make sure you get a Sony one. The thirdparty peripherals are error prone and could loose all of your saved data.

We actually own a Gamecube because when everything came out my kid was really into the Zelda games.

If you check what most analysts say about the market the Xbox has already failed. PS2 is likely to become the VHS of the console world. Xbox = betamax; it might be better technology but it's a dead product.

I thought gamecube is what they say failed.

Xbox numbers (online in particular) have been better than expected.

I didn't say the Gamecube was a player - just that we had one; and why.

Xbox #units sold isn't the issue. The problem is that it's still losing money. You can only take the position of "we're losing money on every sale but making it up in volume."

The hardware is too expensive for the target price point. That's one reason, in addition to anti-piracy, that they're looking at redesigning it to run on a power pc variant. What that means to all you Xbox owners is that in all likelyhood your existing games will not run on the new unit.

that is true... that is why nintendo stopped making them. Well they are off the production line till they sell more of them. Gamecube is fun I think its marketed for little kids and not the adult gamer.

Yeah gamecube is great for younger kids. Nintendo should just drop the gamecube and continue to rule the handheld market.

gamecube did get the rights to resident eveil which I enjoyed playing on ps2.

side note: Max Payne 2......

Pretty good game over all. No real changes from the first one. Still a pretty dark game... some screens are hard to view....

Just my review....I still like the game i will probably buy it

I found the child images in the first one quite haunting. I also found the child screams very bothersome when in the dark room.

yes me too.... I had to mute the part when you are in the dream walking along the blood line and in this one he walks through a "fun house" well I hate things like fun houses...Its more graphic this time around with foul language the f-word is dropped a few times which shocked me. I have it now on rental and only play it while my son is sleeping or not in the room. I dont think the images or voices are appropriate for kids.

Love my X box, but the best game I've played recently is Eternal Darkness, only available on the Game Cube. Very creepy atmosphere, not a kids game at all.

I absolutely love my PS2. Granted, the gamecube and xbox have a bunch of great games, I still went with the PS2 cuz it has EVEN MORE great games. FFX, Gran turismo3, Metal Gear Solid 2, SSX3, I could go on forever. There will never be another in place of my PS2, except for maybe the next one(PS3).

SurferStevo

That was another reason for going with the PS2. I walked down the ailse & looked at the amount of games for it. Xbox did not have nearly the same amount.
On the memory card - I think I'll wait till I heard complaints about starting over before I get one ;)
So what's a fun non-violent game for a 7yr old? Preferably one that supports 2 players.

I just read through really quickly, so this might have been mentioned already. I believe I read awhile ago that these companies don't expect all that much profit on the hardware, but they look at the games as the money makers...obviously the profit on the software is out of this world. 40 bucks a game??? Anyone have info on this? I could swear this is pretty much how it works......make little on the console so folks can get one, and jack up the game prices since that's the money.

I just had a look on Ebay - $10 games! Yeah, some of them are used but to the PS2 newbees at my house it looks like it's gonna be a bonanza.

I love my xbox (mod chip + 120gig hdd). I actually spend more time playing emulators (NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, N64) on it than I do most of the games made for xbox tho. For an easily hackable game console, its xbox all the way (and the xbox media player rocks).

I actually have not touched my PS2 since I got my xbox. In paying Silent Hill 2 and the Tony Hawk games, they look WAY better on the xbox, and I enjoy them much more.

It depends on the type of games you are interested in; however, I prefer Xbox for the type of games available and because of what nemnoch wrote :)

By the way, ps2 online is not free because of the individual sites that require you to pay a fee in order to play. PS2 may be cheaper in regards to online play, but not by much and shouldn't be the determining influential factor :P

srfmon,
SSX3 is a GREAT GREAT game for 2 player action. One of the most addicting games I have ever set my hands on.

Don't forget amped 2, which is considered more realistic when it comes to snowboarding, but less show and go :)

SSX3? I'll have to check it out. My son is 7 yrs old. So I don't want to be buying him stuff like GTA3 vice city (or whatever it's called - the violent game)

PSX is actually just a beefed up PS2 that is $1000+ dollars.
its not beefed up(with the exceptioon of the NIC)- Sony just added all the other components that you'd normally have in your entertainment center into the casing

If you check what most analysts say about the market the Xbox has already failed. PS2 is likely to become the VHS of the console world. Xbox = betamax; it might be better technology but it's a dead product.
I dont know where you're reading at, but none of the consoles are money makers- they money is made from the games, and Sony is trying to remodel their online gaming to compete with X-Live. Creating games for X-bow are easier for the companies to produce because the 'Box runs on a modified NT platform, and since the mojority of the top end games are designed for the PC FIRST, its just a matter of adding a patch to accomodate the controller(which is USB based). For PS2, the entire code has to be redone. Yes PS2 has more games at the moment but that lead is quickly dwindling, and theres only room for 2 consoles on the market- Nintendo learned this just like Sega did- Dreamcast fell by the wayside, and the Cube just did too- both companies are concentrating on games now.
Sony knows they have serious competition- thats why they attempt to put an exclusivity clause in their game contracts like they had with Rockstar Game's GTA3 and Vice City- those games were released THE NEXT DAY after the contract with Sony expired- not weeks but the NEXT DAY- Rockstar already had the game code re-written for the 'Box.
