View Full Version : Is it common for men to shave their body hair?

BrianD

I happened to see a tidbit in the paper about male hair removal products and alternatives. Honestly, I never knew that men shaved their back, legs, chest, etc, or worried about hair in those areas. According to the article, it is a fast growing industry. It says men can spend upwards of $5,000 for laser hair removal (or more).

I can think of better ways to spend $5,000. Is this a California thing or is the sane world also doing this :)

Anyone thinking on spending $5,000 for hair removal. Stop and think about it, then give me the $5,000 and I'll upgrade my tank.

BrianD

I know I would have better uses for $5,000. Not to mention the article said it was quite painful. I have never been a fan of purposely inflicting pain on my body.

Of course, the article also talked about men who get "waxed". Now that is something I would like to do. Have hot wax poured on spots of my body so someone could rip hair out. Sounds like a good ole' time.

Maybe this is one of those "metrosexual' or whatever fads.

Guys that shave their bodies are either gay, or a pornstar!

THIS (http://www.nads.com/flash.htm) is apparently an easier way to do it...ironic, the name of the product:lol:

come on guys, don't be so ignorant.... Male swimmers, bodybuilders are just two examples of individuals that shave there bodies. I was a amateur bodybuilder for 6 years and shaved for competitions... I still shave my arms and chest (my wife got used to it and now loves it). As for paying $5,000 for removal NO WAY never I'll use the good old razor for now...... BUT if I had a back covered in hair I would HAVE to do something about it. I hate body hair and my wife does as well

BrianD

The article specifically mentioned male bodybuilders, Weege. I wasn't meaning to be judgemental (c'mon Jon007, your comment was way out of line), I just didn't know it was that common.

By the way, how do you shave your back? I wouldn't be that coordinated :)

That was not to you it was to Jonoo7. I don't shave my back since I have no hair there (thank god)!!!! :D

Hmm...if I needed to remove hair the same place as that product name, I can't imagine hot wax, laser treatment, or shaving would be much of an option.

ESPECIALLY hot wax.

I shaved my chest once. Never do that again. Itches like He!! til it grows back out. Caught my son shaving his legs awhile back. He's 13. Says he dosent like hair on his legs. I told him now it will grow out darker and thicker so he quit shaving. Guess he was getting embarsed at school cuse he had hair on his legs when others didn't. Can't figure out this younger generation.

Of course, he could have simply been preparing to audition for a role in the school play, where he would play a gay bodybuilding pornstar that swims...

I trim the hair in my "secret garden", no kidding, and I'll admit it. I like a girl to do the same for obvious reasons. I am neither gay nor a pornstar, not that there's anything wrong with being either.:) I like my chest hair though...it stays. It seems I am alone on this one, but that's OK.:) I haven't seen a guy on TV with chest hair in about ten years.

Wow, I had friend of mine (yes, a close female friend) wax my chest before going on spring break, don't ask why, I just thought it might help my game down in Jamaica. Wow, painful as hell, not to mention, I got some nasty rash from the in-grown hairs after a couple days, which looked way worse than hair. I'm never doing that again. I do like to keep trimmed, tho, as I've had good responses from it. Haven't you guys ever watched Sex in the City?

Actually I do have one shaved on my back, pointed down, circled, with a line through it. Gets the point across when I'm in the steamroom at the YMCA.

It's not too uncommon, at least not the chest area. I know quite a few guys that shave their chests. I shave my chest, pits, arms, and privvies. It started out with shaving my balls because of soccer. When you're in weekend tournies with multiple games per day, trust me, the less insulation down there the better. Then later a girlfriend of mine asked me to shave my chest, so i did, and liked the way it felt, especially when having her body against mine. Later, another girlfriend asked me to shave my arms because they're pretty big, and she thought it'd look good. After a while it becomes habitual and a regualr part of daily or every other day hygeine. As for the itching, after the very first two shaves, the growing hair has never itched since.

Try it Brian. I'll bet your misses would like it. Personally, I feel a lot cleaner being as shaved as i am, especially since my Italian genes kicked in long ago and made me part monkey on my front. Luckily, i don't have any hair on my back that i have to worry about, yet.

As a female, I can say that I LIKE a hairy chest... not insanely hairy, but not smooth.

I understand if someone is a bodybuilder or swimmer, they have to shave, so this isn't directed at them.

But to me, a hairy chest (and hairy arms and legs) is part of having testosterone and being a man. I went out with a guy who waxed his chest, and it was disturbing. Sorta like dating a 13 year old. Same goes for the "secret garden". Trimming is good... shaving is bad!

Now if someone has a large amount of back hair and wants to have it waxed, that's ok. But nothing is worse than putting your arms around someone and stroking their back stubble!!! :D

Arm stubble is pretty gross too, so if you don't want hair on your arms, I'd suggest an epilator. The new ones are so much better than those old "epilady" ones! The first time it hurts, so it is good to have a couple of drinks first :D or some ibuprofen... but subsequent sessions aren't that painful, the hair stays gone for a few weeks at a time, and best of all... no stubble. The hairs grow back soft.

Anyway, that's enough about body hair. :)

Please no bugger threads! Brian!!!! We have a friend who looks like a gorilla, he's just emarrased by all his hair. Dan has about 7 chest hairs, and my brothers have less than that. I'm guessing Pat won't need to worry about shaving! I have a leg ripper, wonder if guys use those?

I've done it all. There's certain things that I won't do again, and some that I will.

I like relatively hairless bodies. I'm average as it is, but I still feel monkey-like if I don't do something. I think it's just social programming, the same type of thing that made hairy chests extra popular in the 70s.

It's a growing trend that males engage in more "feminine" behaviors these days. It doesn't surprise me that a 13-year-old boy would shave his legs. I shaved my "hoo hoo" when I was that age. Was that ever itchy!

its a social thing.. its all about sleek, clean cut, and what not...

its like hair dos in some sense.. shag, mullets, cropped.. etc..etc...

i think that if i'd have hair on my back, or thighs, legs or whatever to an excessive point where i felt that it was visually incorrect or where 'social programming' doesn't allow or accep then i'd do something about it,

i only shave around my face.. too much hair is gross, it's like having them long beards and collecting crumbs, and like feel so un groomed and da kind... anything that's too much it seems outta control, my friend has hair on his arms and legs in irrational proportiaons. a strand here and there, but it doens't botter him.... its jsut a psychological and social thingy..

jmo didn't mean to offend anyone or anything...

I'm actually a room service maid - I fluff pillows...

But seriously - I do all the female fluffing - the men don't need a fluffer - viagra is the industry standard now. I hope they don't come out with a female equivilent or I'll be out of a job....

Some guys need hair removal products! As I was waiting in line at Macy's to buy a nice coat for my wife, the man in front of me had a serious bush coming out of his ears and believe it or not had a thick growth of hair on his nose as well! I can't see why he wouldn't shave the bridge of his nose when he shaved his beard!
Btw, I have a hairy chest but I don't shave it, only trim it!:D Looks a lot cleaner imo.

When I was vacationing with friends, both of their boys (15 and 14) shave their legs. They play footfall and soccer, and they say that as much as they get taped up for various bruises and injuries they like the "hairless" approach.

They both use their dad's razor, and don't tell him. I suggested they might want to get their own. I suppose the practice will do them good when they actually get facial hair.

I did it because I'm a hairy dude and dont like it. Its my perogative. She is totally shaved, so I did it for her as a surprise...I figured if she likes it, then she prolly likes me to do it.

The worst thing I have ever seen on guys is overgrown ear and nose hair! YUCK! What happens when all that overrown nosal hair gets missed with mucus? Or the wax plugs that start to solidify and mat in the ears?
Not much for the shave the whole body thing, just as long as the places that collect stuff are clean! If my hubby had too much hair, I'd make him shave it.
