I'd post this in the DIY forum, but it's not for an aquarium.

I've installed an exhaust system in my shop for venting of vehicle exhaust. The exhaust system is built from pvc using 4 inch schedule 40 pipe. I have a 24 inch fan mounted on the wall that I will use for venting the system. The fan is driven by a 1/2 horse motor on a belt drive and should flow roughly 5500 cfm. The fan is fully enclosed, and the 4 inch pvc will be run into the enclosure. I know that the pvc won't flow enough to keep the fan happy, so I plan a bypass to the outside just to keep the motor from overheating without sucking all the heat from the building.

How do I calculate how large to make the bypass?
