how long could live rock be out of water before critters, bacteria etc., start dying?

its because i saw sacks of what the lfs sells as live rock out of the water... some are quite dry already...

is it in any way still "alive" or its just good as any other rock out there or is it still better than the regular rocks

You can re-cure it, but if it has been sitting enough to dry, I would not refer to it as "live rock" anymore. Live rock needs to be wet to keep some life alive, but sitting and drying is just a killer.

Think about the collectors in their boats, I am sure it sits out for a while with them, but it (hopefully) does not get dry.

If it was cheap enough I would buy it and recycle and reseed it.
