Do I really need a sump for my 60 gal ? I have been told both yes/no.

You don't NEED one, but they are very beneficial. You get a larger volume of water, can keep a refuge, keep your equipment (heaters, skimmer, probes) in the sump, can add any additives to the sump and let them mix before hitting your inhabitants, keep the water level constant in the tank. If you make part of it a refuge, you can keep macros for nutrient control, keep an isolated DSB, keep additional LR that may not fit in with your tank setup.
However, you don't need one, or you can setup your tank initially without one, and add one later (something I am going to be doing) if you decide you want one. As always, if you do go with one, make it as big as you can possibly go with. In this case, bigger is almost always better.
