Newbie question...

If one is planning a 55 Gallon FOWLR do I need a refugium ?

Also, maybe a little detail on what a refugium is would assist in anwsering.

Thanks to all.

You do not need a refugium, but they are definately helpful. They can house macro algae to help control nutrients, you can keep extra live rock, you can keep a DSB, it helps to grow pods. There are many things a refugium can provide, but they are not necessary. If you do a search on refugiums, Im sure you can find plenty of information.

BraenDead is right... let me just add that a refugium or sump adds more water volume.

Which in return decreases the chances of things going bad faster than you can react to.

for fowlr i dont think its necessary. pods that come about because of a refugium mainly seem to help tanks with corals. it wouldnt be too bad though to have one. it would increase water volume and all that like adam said. so if you plan to add coral one day, sure do it. it would be nice to have an established refugium when you decide to add them.

You could look into the hangon ones.
