Hi,
I have a question to ask about the bottom of my tank, i wish to have a sand bed and was wondering what the thinckness it should be and also if i should cover the sand with CC, any advice is welcome.
Mitch.

If you've only just set up the tank, and there's nothing in it, it's best to remove most or all of the CC. People have reported that the fine sand just settles to the bottom over time, with the CC on top, which may not be what you want.

For "deep sand bed" purposes, the recommended depth of sand is 4 to 6 inches.

Do whatever you want - it's your tank.

It is not going to make a significant difference what thickness you go, however, you will want to do some searches on "DSB"s, Deep Sand Beds, if you plan on going over 1.5" or so.

If you just want some sand on the bottom, and you don't care about denitrification, then by all means, do what darrin suggests and do whatever you want :) It doesn't really make a difference, especially if you leave the CC down there. Be adviced, though, that you may have to clean it periodically to keep detrius from building up.

Oh. again, do what ever you like. Realize that once you get past 4 inches, you're in deep sand bed territory. Spend some time with the search function at the top of the page to get all the information you need.
