Randy,
It's always difficult for me to take apart my skimmer to clean it because the rubber gasket sticks to acrylic. I don't think petroleum jelly is a good idea for rubber gasket. Is there any other lubricant that can be use with rubber? Is KY jelly OK? KY is a medical, water-soluble, lubricant use on human mucosa. It is use to lubricate various scopes and instruments as we put them into various orifices of the human body. It is not use to lubricate part of the instrument, rather, it is use to decrease friction as we put these instrument into place, thus easy to slide the instruments into the body and of course less pain. I am not really sure what is it in it but will check it later today.
TIA
Minh

Minh,
I use "O" ring lubricant on all my o rings and gaskets. Its a silicone lubricant, made for aquarium use by Rainbow Lifeguard.

It's also commonly available in any dive shop ;) Not being water soluble I would expect the silicone lube to be a better bet than the KY.

I agree that the silicone is a good choice. :)
