I am ordering my lights for the 180 this week and I was wondering how many of you are running closed canopy with open backs or just opened canopy with 2 x 4 running across the top with the lights attached. I am going to be running
3 X 400 and 2 x 60" VHO 140 watts each.

Anyone have any plans they can share?

I built a closed canopy with open back for my 30 gal, and am very pleased. I wouldn't be allowed by my wife to have the top opened because of the looks. I'm about to build an open-back canopy for my 75 gal. I'm planning two 250 watt MH's and four 32 watt PC's positioned front-to-back. The problem is, how do you get to the tank without removing the whole canopy? I'm working on it. If anyone has any ideas I'd be interested, too.

TAC,

I built a canopy with an open back. The top hinges in the middle and the front panel flips up...

At the bottom of the following page you can sorta see my canopy... if you need a better picture let me know.

Both the top and back of my canopy are open, the front has a door that hinges on the top for access to the tank, the only thing that I may change is to add a half back on the upper part of the back of the canop to cut down on the amount of light coming from the VHOs (my tank is not against a wall so I have acces to the rear of the tank as well as the front).
