RIO 2500HP

I have a RIO 2500HP pump that has been running for a year and a half. It is time to replace the impeller. From all the negative posts about the RIO pumps I am wondering if it's better to just replace the pump. Does anybody know if the Rio2500HP pump has a reputation for breakdown or is the problem limited to the smaller RIO pumps.

From my understanding it is the larger pumps that tend to breakdown more than the smaller ones. I would replace the whole thing.

My experience is not with the 2500, but I had a Rio 2100 for my return pump that was leaking all kinds of voltage into the tank, I discovered recently. And the consensus around my local reef club seems to be that the larger Rio pumps just carry more risk than others for problems.

I bought my RIO 2500 a few months ago. I recently replaced it with a MAG 7 because it's so unreliable. By that I mean when I unplugged it for cleaning of my skimmer; when I plugged it back in, it wouldn't start. It still works, however when it stop, I have to beat before it would start running again. Maybe its the heat, maybe its the starting/stopping. This is not acceptable.

On the other hand, I have 3 RIO 2100 and all have performed great over the 2 yrs that I have owned it. This including the on/off scenario I described above.

My opinion is don't get any RIO over 2100 to avoid the frustration and cost. Spend a little more and avoid the hassle.

I also use a rio 2500 as my main return. No problems thus far (knock on wood) in 2.5 years. I do routinely check it and clean. It restarts fine in event of rolling blackout or manual shutdown for tank clean.

FWIW, I had a monster Rio pump I used to transfer water into my Discus tank. It ran hot which was great, as Discus like it this way, it pumped like a Banchie for about 6 mo, then it croaked. May have been rough handling that catalised it's demise?

I think you'll be surprised when you see how much the impellor costs. I'd prolly get a new mag drive of some sort.

I had a Rio 2500 once, ONCE. I do like the 2100. I am on my second, figured after 4 or 5 years it was time to replace it... Though it was working when I replaced it.

I had RIO 2100 that didn't want to restart. It turned out that it was leaking, when I tried to run it in a bucket for testing I accidentally stretched the power cord (keeping one hand in water) and it shocked me a little (I think I was lucky :)).

RIO restart problems may be the first sign of real trouble!

Thanks for the reply's folks. I think I will just play it safe and spring for a MAg pump.
