I'm considering replacing the Rio 1400 powerhead (380 gph) which came with my Remora Pro protein skimmer with a Mag Drive 3 (350 gph) after reading all of the Rio horror stories. I have a 55 gallon tank. The Rio PH is large and gray, and the Mag 3 is larger and black. Does anyone have experience with this setup? Is the Mag 3 too big for a small tank?

Yes, bigtank is. See:

Go ahead and give it a try. It would be good to get a few more reefers to try out the Mag 3 on their Remora Pro's.

I'm using a Mag 5 on my Remora Pro. I have a 75 gal. tank. Per Jason Kim's (President of AquaC) recommendation I put a control valve on it so I could slow down the flow if necessary but so far I haven't had to use it. It works much better than the Rio. (It is however, a lot larger than the Rio.)

I have the Remora Pro with Mag 3. It runs good and quiet. But you will still hear the hissing sounds ( AquaC injectors ). The Mag 3 is much better than the RIO.
