Hermits are known for eating Snails for the their shells. The safest Hermits to keep are Scarlet Red's. However, they still have a tendency to take the shells from Snails.

It's always good to leave a few empty shells around the tank for the Hermits to move into.

Best of luck!

i have had a queen conch for 2+ years that has survived many hermit attacks. I am always impressed by the conchs 'ferocity' when assailed by hermits. I guess the size of the 2 individuals is a factor as well. My hermits however, wont hesitate to borrow a shell from any of my turbos, regardless of whether the snail is still using it.......

I read somewhere that the conch shell has an eliptical opening that is less appealing than the round shell opening of a snail.
For this reason, most hermits will shop but rarely try to move in.

Watching my fighting conch jump about 3" off the ground when a hermit tries to peek inside is hilarious. The hermits usually leave it alone after they are flung halfway across the tank :p
