leaking sen 700 pump

I just got a new AquaC EV 180 skimmer and have set it leaving the pump (a sen 700) outside . The problem is that it has a small leak at the impeller cover. This type of cover has a 90 degree turn to close and an O-ring, which I believe is why I'm having problems running without leaks. I would appreciate your thoughts on making this set up work, I don't have a sump, so I have installed the skimmer to stand next to the tank, therefore if pump can not be made leakproof, then it must go inside the tank itself! and such a large pump looks awful inside the tank!
