I'm debating whether to conver up the tank or not. I'm using the custom sea life PC and have no cover. Is it okay without a cover?
or do i have to cover it up? if so, what i use to cover up the tank. i heard some use plexi glass and lighting shade.

I use PC lighting as well, I have removed the cover from my tank as the water tended to get pretty hot. In addition, the PC lights have a plexiglass sheild on them so you do not need the cover. You will need to clean the plexiglass sheild every 2 weeks or so due to salt build up. You'll also have increased evaporation to deal with-but not that big a deal.

i run open top on my 75gal also with a powercompact i purchased some legs for it so now it sits about 4inches above the tank it looks great and keeps the heat down

No top for me.. I'd never be able to control temps with a top on.

I just took my cover off about 1 1/2 weeks ago because I couldn't keep the temp down. Now I don't have any problems with that but am losing a lot more water due to evaporation. I am in the process of setting up my sump/refuge and will install and continuous drip system to deal with that. I also have PC lights on legs and the fixture has a plexiglass shield. No problems with the lights getting wet. Also, your tank will actually get more light because glass tends to reflect back up into the lights. IMO, much better without the top and not having to worry about temps.

no top here either. Lots of evaporation but cool temps.

I run no cover on my tanks for better gas exchange, heat control and better light penetration.

I started off without a top and have gone to using one because of the evaportion that was taking place. The thought of my pump burning up while i was away was just too much, plus i now keep cat hair and other things from the water. i dont have a problem keeping the temps down, water is at 78 just above room temperature. my lights are on stilts though so maybe that helps keep the temp down.

No cover on either tank. One has a 9" high canopy - front is open when I am not home - but fish would have to jump 3-4" over the canopy to get out. The back is partially open also. 7+ months no problems (since I took old cover off).

Eggcrate for me! Not quite topless, but close enough.

I run an open top. If I didn't, I'd have lots of heat issues with 400w of light over my 29:)
