...what exactly "cyano" is? What does it look like? Everyone on the forum seems to think it's horrible (like hair algae). Thanks.

Cyano is Cyanobacteria, a photosynthetic bacteria. It's a red to burgandy goop that feels slimey to the touch. It speads fast and can cover corals and live rock depriving them of light.

Also, it's ugly...Makes the tank look like it's covered by red snot.

Aquaman hit the nail on the head. One point to clarify, Cyano is not always red. There are different strains and some are green, black or brown.
