I'm looking for good pictures of odd creatures found in BRS Members' tanks. If you have successfully identified it that's even better. This is for the newsletter based on an idea from TobyT. A post here is fine or you can email them to me if you'd prefer.

Hey Rob - I found some weird stuff in my tank lately - I think they are foraminiferans, but not the usual red, spikey kind. I will try to get a decent picture and send it to you . ..

I am very curious to see what others have found - It is so cool to find stuff that you didn't put in there . .. you know what I mean? My tank has been up for 4 years and I haven't put anything new in in months - yet new stuff keeps showing up . . . I love this hobby!!

Everything counts . . . how many times have you seen a post saying "I found this weird looking thing in my tank . . ."

Newbies and veterans alike are always coming up with something new (as Sea Serpent pointed out). I was thinking I could put some of these pics in the newsletter with a brief description of what they are. Not a whole article per se more of an "Interesting Factoid" type of thing.

I know much of the info is out there on the web, I just wanted to make it more easily accessible to BRS members. I need pics from BRS members so we don't have any copyright issues. I can't very well go stealing pics from the "Pro's" now can I :D

Keep them coming! I may need some help identifying things. If I can find it on the web then I'll be OK but if not . . .
So if anyone can verify what's been posted in here I'd appreciate it.

Here's a not so uncommon Stomatella varia

http://www.littlereef.com/photo_post/data/9/1stomp01.jpg

And here is a strange little guy that was never positively ID'ed. This thing is only about an 1/16 of an inch long, very small. Dr Ron and others think it might be a small anemone of some sort...

Gumhead, that 1st one looks like "Kilroy was here" without the fingers, too funny! Nice pics

I started to get these growing on my LR in one area about 3 weeks ago. About 1/4"-1/2" in size. They look like baby frogspawn but I see no skeletal structure to them. Plus I have no frogspawn coral. Not the clearest pic but the best my camera will do.

Here are some weird dark red nodules with yellow-ish speckles I found on my LR.... I couldn't get a positive ID out of people here on RC. Any idea what this actually is?

I'm not sure. I came in an Acropora, it might be one of the commensal crabs.

I have similar looking stuff growing in my tank. I think it is some type of macro algae. I will post a pic of mine later.

Here is a pic of what I have, look similar but not the same. I am still betting on algae for both of them.

The only attempt at an ID I got here on RC was possibly some sort of macro algae.... {shrug}

I also have the red bubble macro algae. I think it is a form of the red bead algae. I think red bead algae takes many different forms. I have it in its regular form- branches with red beads, and I've had it with just tubular branches, and I have the red bubble type as well with varying shapes.

ugh, put it back in the tank! It is sad to see it just flailing around like that, gasping for air.

Keith Sheridan

I think it is a Moeapora smalltanctum.

Isn't that One-eyes 2 headed creature? I can just see the 2nd head on the left.

I posted a new thread for ID Purposes, but thought I'd add to this motley collection.

Anybody know what it is?

Howard brought back some 5G buckets of algae from the Cape, was it? and he discovered two small fish that came with the algae. I saw one and it was a bright candy apple green! the exact color of the algae too. Couldn't get a photo last time I visited Howard's, but wish someone could ID it. Probably won't survive in a tropical tank, but very interesting critter. Howard, any luck getting a photo of it?

I don't know what this red/orange thing is -- sponge? (but it's got those wacky extensions) It is in Howman's tank.

Howman's anemone shrimp. Hard to focus on since it's CLEAR!

Tip for Canon S200 users. I just discovered the S setting. My camera was on S50. I changed it to S400 -- hopefully, it can get better shots now.

I was thinking about this last week while on vacation....

Can we use algea from our waters to feed herbivores in our tanks? I hate the idea of buying sushi quality seaweed if I can just get seaweed from my cape house.

Yeah, I do it all the time.

I love that sponge he has. I have the same kind from Greg Hiller, which is where he got it. My sponge isn't nearly that size yet.
