I'm looking at getting a metal halide setup when I upgrade my tank (soon).
I can get a PFO ballast, reflector and 10 000K bulb for about 310$ here in Canada. That's the best price.
It's also kinda high.
PFO ballasts are just conventional magnetic ballasts, right? If so, I wonder if I can get a similar unit (like an Advance) at a local lighting place and wire it myself... what do you think? Wouldi t be comparable? Safe?
If they don't have good reflectors there, I can always order one from the place in Canada (including socket assembly) for 70$. With a bulb, that would bring the price to 184$ (plus a ballast from a local shop).
What do you think?

I think you may do better via ebay, that is unless you really like to DIY w/ electricity
