I've got two in my tank. In fact, before I bought a second one, I purchased a MaxiJet. But I quickly found out it wasn't near as quiet as my AC. So it was returned, and I bought a second AC.

In short, they are fantastic... and quiet. Now with the popularity of the Maxi's, I probably got a bum Maxi, who knows.

Thanks for the reply. Chowhound wants 33 bucks apiece. I thought that was a little steep considering I can get a max900 for 16.95 but I haven't checked out shipping yet.

I've used both AquaClear and maxijet powerheads. In fact, I still have an AC 802 that I used as a return pump from the wet dry on my old 29 gallon reef. It's like 10 years old, and still works fine. I think the difference that I've seen is that the maxijets stand up better to being repeatedly turned off and on, like you would use on a wavemaker. Other than that, they're both solid powerheads IMO.

The Maxi's were more expensive during my shopping tour. And, the AC's were cheaper - the main reason I initially chose that brand/model. Honestly, I don't think you'll go wrong either way. But, if the Maxi has a noisey impeller, take it back.
