I have recently acquired a used 180 tank from a local reefer. The tank is unusal in that its dimensions are 84Lx 18wx 24h. It is made of 1/2 inch glass and has 3 top braces. On each end there is a 4 in wide brace and in the middle there is 24 inch brace (all 1/2 inch glass. My question is whether I can remove the middle brace and still not have any problems with bowing (or worse failure, since the tank is used). What the options for bracing other than the wide center brace? I really hate to have the reduction in lighting intesity caused by this obstruction if I dont have to.

Any ideas from the tank builders out there?

Thanks
Mike

There have been numerous posts about removing the center bracing. Most people said not to do it and I will have to agree with them.

If you choose to do so, better pray your tank doesn't bow over time and break. There are solutions to getting around the removing the center brace. Don't chance it. I know I wouldn't.
