I recently finished building a DYI Beckett down draft skimmer for a SWFO tank. Playing around with it I decided to see how it would perform if I filled the main reaction chamber with (forget name) 21/2" orange bioballs. After doing so I noticed almost the entire main chamber becomes filled with wet frothy foam. The skimmers down draft is near the bottom and designed to make the water spin counter clockwise inside the main chamber. There is an influent of water (no bubbles) that enter near the top of the main chamber also angled to provide a counter clockwise rotation within the chamber. The skimmer height is approx. 36 inches tall with flow rate of around 700 to 800 gallons per hour going thru it. Most of which is delivered via the Beckett fountain head. I'll try to post some pics as it is something to see.
