Sump ?s

Have a 55gal tank. thinking about building a sump for it. have a cannister filter now. was wondering, what size of sump would any of you suggest? Would also like to be able to incorporate a fuge in the design, if possible. And what type of skimmer, and pump?
I was thinking of around a 15gal. have no idea on skimmer and pump.

As big as possible.

You cannot have a sump that is too big. I would think 20 gallon would be good for a 55 if you can fit it. I have a 60 gallon tank partitioned into a sump and refuge for my 90 gallon display tank.
