View Full Version : My weekend project

I've been having electrical issues in my house. For example, any time my wife plugs in the iron the breaker that powers my tank trips. After verifying that it was indeed a load issue and not a failing breaker it became clear that I needed to add a circuit for my tank. (I'd also like to punch the guy who originally wired the house but he's my wife's uncle.....)

I ran a new 15 amp circuit to the tank room. The wall behind the tank houses the wiring and pipes for my hot water heater out in the garage. Instead of trying to snake the wire through that mess I used surface mount conduit and boxes. The wire comes in right next to a door casing so it's just barely noticeable:

GFCI protects the whole circuit and I installed a timer to control one pair of outlets.

Since I no longer had power issues in the room I went ahead and rewired my existing Hellolights 4 x 110w VHO setup to a two bulb setup. I'd had a 2 x 175w PFO retrofit kit in the closet for almost a year so it got installed as well.

With some guidance from the folks in the Coral Forum I'm now acclimating my livestock to much improved light levels. I got very good growth from the VHOs but was never thrilled with the light color. I'd also never had the chance to see what the tank looks like under actinic light only; it's very cool.

Having installed a couple of new powerheads and my Reef Fanatic Wave Creator earlier last week the tank has gotten a major upgrade. It's a very satisfied feeling.

beerguy don't you know anything? You cannot type something like this without showing us a picture of before and after. Geez!

:D

It might be a little late for a "before" picture. :) I'll snap a picture of the "after" tonight when I get home. What I thought was going to be the most difficult part of the project, correctly rewiring the ballast, turned out to be cake. Hellolights had the information on their site the whole time - they just don't know it.

Here's the after picture. Not really much to look at:

I'll dig up some old full tank shots and take some new ones to compare those.

Pardon the size off these pictures as they are from my "reef cam".

This one is the tank under the VHOs:

This is under the new Ushio/Actinic setup:

beerguy, tell me about the timer you installed? where'd ya get it, how well it works, how adjustable it is, etc. Can you set individual outlets or just pairs? I'm refinishing my basement and could probably throw one or two of those in the office/fish room. thanks, tom

I use these (http://www.intermatic.com/?action=prod&pid=193). I've had two running VHOs for over a year. They are hard-wired so they can control one outlet or a whole circuit (depending on load of course).

Cheers

where do you get them? appears you can't order direct through the website.

TIA

Hey beerguy,
what did you use for a reflector?

It started life as a Hellolights 4x110w VHO retrofit; which is why the two empty pair of endcaps are still installed.

Hey beerguy

How did you get that Yellow Tang to stop in the same spot for both the before and after of your tank pictures?? :D

When you stand by the tank he sits there and waits for food. He's quite the little piggy.
