Wow...my bristle worm came out to play the other day, so I snapped a pic. He's a big sucker.
I never see this guy during the day, I kind of wonder why he was out.

Good God!!! If my wife or kids saw that thing in my aquarium, they'd move out of the house! Where can I get one that big? :D

I have a dozen or so that big, some bigger, all in a 75g reef. I had no idea that they grew that large. :) I used to hunt them, but now go with the group that says they don't cause trouble - I've never had one go after a healthy coral, and they seem to operate much like a maggot (which used to be used for healing humans), eating only necrotic tissue.

At least, I hope so. :)

In addition, I have dozens and dozens of smaller ones...I have a rock covered with GSP; when I feed the tank, the bristles just boil out of the rock. Kinda spooky, but definitely interesting to watch...

Great picture! I have a couple just like it. I've been wanting to catch one to get a picture. Mine climb the back corner of the tank at night but quickly retreat when I put the flashlight on them.

Thanks for sharing,
Kevin

I think I saw a post a while back with a picture of like a six footer, this one looks like it's well on it's way. I think the guy pulled it out of his PVC rock supports. Do a search , you're sure to find it.

I think I'll give him a name...how's "Fang" sound ?
Kinda catchy.

I would sure like to know why he came out during the day though...maybe a bigger one kicked him out ? yikes..there's a scary though.

Hi Gary, That is a "Christmas Wrasse" I got at "The Reef Shoppe" when it first opened up. Tom was sad to see him go.

Wow, I though my guy was big..Just fatter.. (And it does hurt more when they are larger) I had a ton of them in the tank we had for seahorses, they must of hitched a ride with some crappy rock i bought from a lfs..... but never bothered any fish or coral...

Geez, I am never handling live rock without gloves again. I pulled a 4 incher out of a tank at my old LFS, and that creeped me out. I get the heeby jeebies (sp?) just looking at that pic.

Curious,

What happens if you would grab a hold of one like that?
I have at least 1 like that in my tank.

Thanks

Looks about the same size as the one I found in my tank while doing some maintenance. I picked a small piece of live rock that has some hair on it intending a cleaning it of and instead got two fingers full of bristles (man those things itch). Ended up carefully scooping the whole rock out and threw it all away, scarey thing is that worm was still alive when trash day came 5 days later.

I think Steve Weist (sp) had a 6 foot long worm living in the PVC supports of his rock work. I can't find the link. Does anyone know of this RC link?

The Six Foot Worm Thread (http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=152249&highlight=worm)

It still grosses me out:eek: !

Yes, Steve Weast did have a 6-ft worm in his tank but it wasn't a bristle worm, it was a eunicid: http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=152249&highlight=worm+AND+PVC

The healthy looking specimen that is the topic of this thread appears to be Eurythoe complanata.

I still get a shiver up my spine when I think of finding something like that lurking in a tank.

And in Steve Weast's case, his eunicid was a coral eater, which is why he had to completely dismantle his entire 500-gal reef, including sand bed, to remove it. Dr. Ron assures us that most bristle worms are harmless scavengers. Gee, I hope he's right, I just put a dozen Eurythoe complanata in my tank!

Oh man, I thought the first one was bad. :eek2:

If you think that first worm was bad......

In the keys last week i saw dozens of bristleworms that were over 12" when compressed, and more than an inch in diameter. I thought about bringing some back but i was afraid they'd eat my fish.

Man what a big worm!!! I would place him in the fuge, because if you have clams they can be a good meal to him.
Nice pic though!:)
