How did you come to find Reef Central, and how has it changed your perception and goals in this fascinating hobby?

To answer my own question, I did a general web search and stumbled across it about 2 1/2 years ago. I was a lurker for a very long time. I spent many hours each night I could reading and gaining information that helped me understand not only how a reef system worked, but how I could achieve this goal with time and patience. As I look back, I think how many mistakes I have bypassed ( not to mention the amount of livestock I decided against sentencing to a slow death, from lack of information ) from all the information found on this site. It also never ceases to amaze me how every day I learn something completely new, or a new and better way to improve on an already tried and true method.

Thank you to the Admin., Mod., & Members of RC.:)

I got my 29 gallon tank with eclipse 3 hood from Petco the first week of last September. At that time, I had not heard of RC and took advise from my lfs and my previous experience with FW. I used CC for substrate per my LFS becuase they said that is what I had to use. They also told me to cycle with a damsel. I was so excited to finally have a SW tank. I had allways wanted one back when I was into FW but I just never thought I'd be able to do it. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my tank at first and just had two damsels, CC and a piece of dead coral that you can buy at the LFS. I had never heard of keeping live coral in an aquarium before. Then, at the end of September, right as my tank was getting done cycling, I found RC. I learned about live rock, corals, lighting and much more. If I hadn't found this place, I'd probably still have my tank with two damsels, CC, a dead coral, NO lights, no live rock, and a YELLOW TANG, hehe, had to put the part about the tang in there:) I've learned so much and there is still so much more for me to learn. I'm addicted to this site and it has helped me out so much.

Voted: Advise from a seasoned reefer & or reef club.

There was this random guy talking about water chemistry and live rock in a lfs. I talked with him just a little bit, and he mentioned a site that you could go to and post al kinds of questions and get all kinds of answers. I couldn't remember what he called it, so it took a few web searches.

On top of all this great advise, he then told me a flame angel would do "absolutely fine" in my little 10 gallon tank. :rolleye1: Guess he was friends with the owner or something.

I used to be really active on the Premium Aquatics message board. One day ReefSkinner told me about RC and I have been here ever since.

I set up my 90 gallon and had it running for a couple of months before I found ReefCentral. I had setup my tank based on knowledge I had that was over 10 years old. Only thing I knew is that I needed to let my tank cycle and add a skimmer.

Wow...after getting on RC, there's so much more great information. Here I am 2+ years later...and I have complete confidence in setting up a new 180. I visit this site multiple times a day....it's addiciting.

Got an email from Larry M (RC founder) during the raging AquaLink wars, saying he was sorta fed up, and starting a board where everyone would be like a family, not at each others throats.

And so it began...

A member of my local club at the time told me that he and a couple of friends were starting an internet bulletin board. It wasn't much then, about a dozen posts. Seemed kinda weak compared to the other boards at the time  .

Mako listed an Aqua C skimmer on Ebay back in 2001 with a link to Reef Central where the same skimmer was being used on the tank of the month.

I found it just looking for information.

I wish I found it earlier - it would have saved me a LOT of headaches and $$.

My boyfriend and I were referred to RC by Rob Toonen last summer.

We both have received so much info on this board and it's a fun place to hang out. I don't know where we would be in our knowledge of reefs it we had never found RC.

Local Fish Store (Blue Sierra in Issaquah, Wa) pointed me towards it.

See, not all info from a LFS is bad! :D

Hey... me too! I thought I was special

Those were the good 'ole days. I can remember when there were *very* few people on this board. All helpful, nonetheless.

I typed in Reefs in Yahoo search and went to reefs.org. I join, noticed people referring to RC, or the "other board" and came over here to see what was up.

Haven't gone back to Reefs.org since.

I have been in the Saltwater hobby for about 7 years now. Until a couple of years ago I relied on my LFS and friends for information on my tank. I also had Burgess' Marine Atlas as my reference source. However, that all changed when looking for more and better online e-tailers I ran into Saltwaterfish.com.

I found that there was a whole community out there that allowed for exchange of information. After posting on SWF for about 6 months, I kept hearing about Reefcentral, and was intrigued. I started visiting here and I liked what I saw.

Just about that same time I got into a public disagreement with a very closed minded (and new) moderator over there, and subsequently was booted from their site. (he had joined SWF after I had, and apparently he didn't like his faulty opinions and advice criticized).

However, I view being booted from SWF as a good thing. It forced me to come here, and I have not looked back. People are freindlier here, and most of the time give better advice. :D

This is unusual for most of you, but when I first started going to my now favorite LFS he told me about reefcentral and RDO.
