looking for an ID on this guy. looks like either one of those evil cone snails, or a conch to me.

It looks a bit like a conch, but that red tipped snout disturbs me. Also, the back of that shell isn't as spiraled as you'd expect on a conch. AND the shell looks like a cone snail shell.

The forum you'd want is Dr. Ron's forum, but he is off for the summer. Which is a shame because you took the right pics and it would take him 4 seconds to ID that bad boy.

My guess would be some type of Olive Snail.

I had four different snails that were evil and ate other snails. After that experience anything that looks suspect gets banished to the fuge with my equally evil bluelegs or straight to the trash can. One snail that I had was a whelk I think? Anyway it looked like a big conch and it managed to eat around five astreas and two margaritas. I caught it in the morning before work and hung it in a Lee's specimen container so I could deal with it when I got home. It climbed over the rim on the container and back in to the display and finished off who knows how many other snails until I got home and caught it finishing one of my red leg hermits, it's last meal ever.

That looks frighteningly like the venemous shell thing I saw on Discovery Channel a couple weeks ago that shoots poisonous darts.

I hope its not one of those they said it has enough venom to kill 60 people.

yes i considered the possibility of it being a cone snail and as such avoided directly handling it. i'd like to see if it gets bigger. i should note that i believe i have a shell from an identical snail already in my tank, from a bunch of empty shells i threw in (including some massive shells from what i know to be cone snails, very pretty shells).
