View Full Version : What size is your tank - what size is your sump?

What size is your sump in relation to your sump? I'm putting a sump / refugium in, and due to space might only be able to fit a 20 gal. tank down there....is that too small for a 100 gallon tank?

On my 120g I have a 75g refugium that feeds to a 40g sump then returns to the main tank. It all depends on space and equipment, and personal preference.

Steve,

I currently have a 200 gallon tank, 100 gallon sump/prop tank and 30 gallon refugium. IMO, the refugium is really too small for that size tank.

Since we are moving next month, a larger tank will be in order. My plan (somewhere down the road when I can afford a new tank) is a 450 gallon tank, 300 gallon refugium and 100 gallon sump.

I have a 29 tank and a 20 sump because it fits perfectly under the stand i have and almost doubles the amount of water in the system, I dont really think it matters to much how big of a sump you have as long as you have enough room in there for what you want to put down there, i like having a big on on the small tank because it keeps my water levels more stable.

I dont know about the refugium part of it, i am still looking into adding one to my tank.

90g tank and 29g refugium/sump. If I had the room, I would have went with a bigger tank underneath.

90 gallon tank, 56 gallon sump (sump/refuge in one). With the water level I designed I am probably only using about 40 gallons of the sump tank space, 20 gallons refuge and 20 gallons in the sump area.

As far as size goes, my opinion is that the bigger the sump you can run the better, even if it is bigger than the display tank. The flip side is I believe it is always better to have a sump (regardles of size) than to not have one.

Current set-up 240 Gallon tank and a 480 gallon sump. Previous set-up - 125 gallon tank 40 gallon sump and a 40 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump.

Salt-reefer,

Looks like we are on the same page.

I am currently planning a 450-600 gallon tank with a 150 gallon refugium/grow out and an undetermined sump, probably around 120. I am currently thinking a 4'x2'x2' sump (120 gallon capacity) with about 50 gallons normal running volume. I am going to use my existing tank as the future refugium and just run a the two tanks from the same sump.

150g display
30g sump
10g refugium

Sump size is fine even with a Euroreef Skimmer in it, but refugium is way too small. Only size I could fit underneath the tank though along with my calcium reactor and external pump.

120g Starphire tank (48"x24"x24" --- standard size)
30g Sump 27"x16"x16" (w/ refuge in the middle section... for now)

I might add a 10g refuge tank to sit perpendicular on top of my 30g sump (drain into the middle section) later on, as I need it.

220 gal. main tank
220 gal sump.

With big sumps you can put anything in there. I use it for grow out, refugium and hospital when necessary by partitioning part of it off. Ca be lit on an alternating light cycle from the main tank to minimize ph swings.
