Deep into the construction planning stages on my 45 g acrylic that has a 1/2 circle front and is 30" deep. It has 300 watts of PC lighting with (4) 24" bulbs and I'm considering a 250 HQI also in the cuustom built in hood. It will have a 15 g live rock refugium with skimmer built in underneath with lighting to help control alge.

The basically the only fixed piping connections are from the pressure side of the pump to the tank. Most of the water moves through the system by gravity and simply overflow from on system to the next to avoid leaks. It is built in the living room. The bottom tank also has an over flow to the kitchen drain.

It has a 4 stage ROI filter with 2 additional DI stages, we have poor water. The make up and fresh salt water change system will be automatic. All of this is built into the 30" wide by 8' floor to ceiling enclosed cabinet. I will prebuild on an acrylic support a wall of Fuji rock bottom to top in the back center of the tank.

Still aways off from even adding water and leak testing but planning is half the fun.

I am considering using HomeDepot play sand and installing a custom made under sand filter that will take a small stream from the Dolphin pump to maintain a very low rate filter through the sand bed and to help maintain silica levels. Comments on the filter idea?

I plan on both hard and soft corals after it totally cycles, which I figure may take 6 months and a few small reef fish for interest.

It will be any suggestions on the best assortment of critters to keep the tank clean? or anything else.

I like the 250 watt hqi de bulb. I have the 150's and wish I had a little more light.

I've toyed with the idea of an overflow in my sump. Only thing is what would happen during a power outage? Would too much water drain out and cause a problem? How would it be replaced with new salt water vs. topped off with RO water? Or does the sump drain have a valve on it that you only open during water changes?

I find that playsand doesn't look as nice as aragonite Southdown type sand. Don't know about your planned undergravel system. Although different methods work for different people, I believe most people go with a deep sand bed or even bare bottom. I am very happy with a 4' deep sand bed. No maintenance needed.

Do a search on clean-up crew for lots of info.
