I have a 125 gallon reef with a 90 gallon sump that is in the basement both have a 4''-8'' DSB and about 250lbs live rock split between them.
I just bought a 70 gallon reef ready tank that will be for a Porcupine puffer that I already have and I will be adding a Snowflake Eel and a Wrasse of some kind, possibly a Lunare.
I doubt the 70 will have a deep sand bed. I don't think that's feasable with the Eel and Wrasse and I would like to keep as much swimming room open so It won't have much live rock either.
I'm thinking of hooking the 70 up to the 90 gallon sump along with the reef tank.
The 125 reef has a small fish load
1 Scooter blenny
1 Firefish
2 True Percula Clowns
1 Flame Hawk
1 Yellow tail Damsel
Also
1 Flower Anemone
1 LTA

The only thing that has me worried would be the waste produced by the Puffer since they are messy eater's

Do you think this would be a good idea? or Bad idea and why?

The live rock and your DSB you got will help alot. You should be fine. Do you skim?

I'd say bad Idea - you can run that fish tank with the puffer with nitrates 20-40. You don't wan't to do that with the reef.

Depends on the kind of reef you have.

An SPS tank wouldn't benefit from it, but a softy tank might do quite well with the added nutrients.

I say run 'em separate b/c it's not that you want to run the eel and puffer tank at high nitrates, it's that it just will have a high nutrient level cause that's just what happens w/tanks that have big messy eaters like that. It'll cause headaches for you w/your other tank IMO

Yes its skimmed with a modified TF 200.
Its a softy tank for now and that won't change in the near future.

I vote for separate also. It will make the reef more stable.
