View Full Version : What temperature do you keep your tank at?

I keep mine at or near 82 degrees. (Fluctuates +/- 1 degree depending on the time of day.)

On page 10 of Ron Shimek's "How to Get There from Here... Hints and Techniques to Make Reef Keeping Easier" he discusses temperatures. After going through the various temps on the reef, he writes:

"Consequently, if you keep yoru reef at an average temperature of 81.7' F, and don;t let it drop below 76.4' or rise over 86.4 you will have a pretty good mimic of the "average coral reef." CONDITIONS AROUND THE AVERAGE OF 81.7' F ARE LIKELY TO BE VERY CLOSE TO THE OPTIMAL CONDITIONS FOR ALL CORAL REEF ANIMALS." (Capital letters as per the booklet.)

Obviously, we have all found a temperature that 'works' for our systems, but I'm curious how far people deviate from 81.7.

Well, if it works for you and your fish, it can't be so bad. Remember, the quote above is based on averages. But I am sure there are those that would say LONG TERM it might have an impact on certain corals and fish. And I am sure there are those that would say my temp is too high. But if it's good enough for someone who has studied marine biology (Dr. Ron), it's good enough for me. :D

I try to keep mine over 73º and below 90º. :D

It usually hangs around 77º-84º

I used to keep mine at 82-84F but lowered it during "the flatworm war" to 75-76F. Although I didn't really see any problems with the tank at the lower temperatures, now that I'm gradually raising it again (at 78-79F now) I'm seeing better results - better expansion and polyp extension in corals, less sensitive clams, hungrier more active fish.

Mine holds steady at 80-81.. I have a 250w MH about 9 inches from the water over a 29 gal.. DIY open back hood with one 4" Radio Shack CPU fan.. and I need a heater to keep it at 80 degrees..

I have done considerable research on this subject!
After purchasing a chiller with the capacity to keep my temp just about where ever I want, I wanted to do my best for the animals sake at selecting the best temp.
One big difference to consider is we are dealing with closed systems and not anywhere near the size of the ocean which will have several impacts like with stability.
Bottom line I keep mine at 80 in the summer and 78 during the cooler months.
I have observed fellow reefers keeping their systems from 74 to 84.... that is intentionally!
Thanks for the post!

79 in the morning, heating up to 82-83 right before bedtime when the MH go out. I don't have a chiller.

Hi All,

This is one of those subjects that get debated endlessly

Here is a one of the longer ones:

Me, ~82 degrees.

Also, lets work to keep this thread “conducive to further constructive dialog

Before my new canopy my low temp was 78 and high was at 80

So far ( less than a week with canopy I just built ) low is still 78 and the high nevers goes above 79.

IME & O

Keeping the temp. stable is of more importance then the Temp. itself ( of course within reason ) a constant 90 or constant 65 wouldnt be good.:)

Mmhhh.... I wonder why Master Yoda and Master Windu never thought of that...?

No seriously, I've seen the same thing. When I kept my tanks at ~77, got stressed during summertime, as the temp would go up to 82. However, my corals seemed to do better at such temps!!! Then after reading Dr. Ron, I deceided to change the yearly average to 82 and seem to have better results.

}BTW Flame*Angel, I'm a fan of your website and tank. Nice job!!

My 29 gallon stays between 81.5 - 82.6..

My 80 gallon stays between 80.1 - 81.1...

They never drop below the lower # but occasionally on extra hot days, they do fluctuate an extra .5 degrees...
