Dr Ron,

Can you help me identify this? It is mainly on the glass (photo), but also appears on some rockwork (photo)and area's of the sand (photo). It re-appears withing 6 hours of being wiped from glass. Corals by the way, have never looked happier.

Forgot to mention, when I directed a powerhead at the glass to see if this would discourage it, it had no affect. Same rate of return as other less circulated areas.

Hi,

I would guess that it is a unicellular green alga, but without a sample I can't get any closer to an identification than that. It will not likely overgrow things, but you are also not likely to have many things that will eat it.

My suggestion is that you try to get some other algae going in the sump or elsewhere in the tank to utilize some of the nutrient build up the green one is living on.

:D

Thanks for the input and advice.

The funny thing was this showed up over the weekend when I was gone for 2 days and didn't feed the tank. Whole tank looked even better than normal (kinda insulting given I wasn't involved) except that my algae blennie croaked. Corals all seem super happy. Go figure.
