Cleaning Pump

I picked up a pump for cheap from a friend. He used it to push water with fertilizer. How can I clean this pump to make it safe for use in my Top-Off system?

If the pump is encrusted with lime deposits then I would clean it with a diluted muratic acid solution. Just be careful with it as it will burn your skin.

If it is not then I would soak the impeller and chamber with a strong clorine bleach solution. This will sterilize it and should clean off any chemical deposits.
