I recently added Aquarium salt to my freshwater tanks at the suggestion of the local experts on ridding my plecostomus of the growth on his side. I learned that Aquarium salt keeps disease at bay more, so its better to use it. I followed the steps and reviewed them carefully. However, i failed to take my favorite snail into consideration. He inhabits my 65 gallon tank, to which I had applied 8 tablespoons of aquarium salt. after about an hour, my girlfriend said, oh, did you find out if it was ok to do that with the snail in there? The poor guy, I hadn't even given him a thought. i immediately took him out and placed him in the cooler, non salted goldfish 40 gallon tank. Will he be ok?

Hi,

[welcome]

In very small amounts salt is tolerated by most freshwater snails. In slightly greater amounts, it is lethal to them.

I think it would probably be okay at the level in your 65, but that amount of salt is borderline toxic for some species.

I have kept my 65 gal goldfish bowl salted...now that I am attached to the plants and snails, I don't...I would reserve salting for a first line of medicine...
