this is for my understanding and future references to get a field of how metal halide is used, but even with a 175 watt metal halide place at a height of 10 inches, would that cut lighting penetration sufficiently to make the light ray obsolete once it enter the water?

how high up should a 175watt metal halide be place?

i have order a 250 watt metal halide and i am pretty sure i will be very happy with it. the question above is so i can get a field of how to make a final adjustment if problems do arise.

Placing the light high has the advantage of better spread of light in the tank, protecting the light from water splatter, and helping with heat dispersion.

However light intensity is reduced by the square of the distance so the further from the water surface the less light will penetrate.
