you loose a small fish in your large reef. Do you attempt to fish the deceased out or let your clean up crew do their job?

Unless I can see it I just leave it in there and let someone eat it.
Never had a problem with this.
Once I had 4 fish die at once from no heater. I had to tear down to get them out.

A large reef with a good clean-up crew should be able to process the dead fish with no problem at all...

Even though I have a "small" 180, I'll add my 2 cents :D

I don't keep many "big" fish. If a little guy dies, I don't spend much time attempting to retrieve it. If a tang died, I would do my best to remove it before it caused any problems.

Bah! Lost a 4" Copperband after going out of town for a weekend... never even found any bones. And that's only in a 90 Gallon!
There was literally, no sign whatsoever, that there was ever another fish in the tank when I got home that Sunday evening. It did not jump out (checked), wife didn't scoop any floaters out for me... it just up and vanished!
Now that's a sandbed for ya ;)

i lost a banded pipe fish. I thought he was sleeping, as he died in his usually sleeping spot. He is very small 3". I can only see his tail, and he hasnt moved since this morning, so I think he is dead.

Hermits will make quick of him I am sure.

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. I lost a 5" Copperband Butterfly in my 135g. It was acting strangely. Last time I saw it was at the top of a deep dark cave in my rockwork. Never saw him again until 48 hrs. later his skull came drifting out of the rocks. It was picked completely clean, not a scrap of flesh. No NH3, no NO2 and no NO3. None of the other tank inhabitants had any problems. As long as your clean up crew is good, I don't think you will have any problems.

When any fish died in my old 90 I would feed it/them to my carpet anemone. That dam thing would eat anything and everything.

Why let the dead fish go to waste :p
