Got some xenia the other day that was not attached to any rock. I rubberbanded them to some rock and they seem ok I guess. They stay open most of the time but they are not pulsing. Sometimes they close for a few hours then reopen. Is there something wrong with them or are they still adjusting?

How old is your tank? Xenia, especially Pulsing Xenia likes an established aquarium. If yours takes to your tank it will grow like weeds. If not, it will probably die in a week! IMO. New tank=less than six months they say.

Xenia is one of those corals that are a good litmus test for your tank. if its pulsing well and constantly it likes your tanks parameters. If not it doesnt.

Tank has been setup for about 2 years. Guess I'll have to go get some water tests done.

Give it some time to adjust and attach to a rock. If it doesn't start pulsing then, take a look at your parameters. I used to have a problem with xenia not ulsing but when I started doing more water changes and keeping my pH and alk up it started pulsing. I also think they like a lot of light.

You can ask around for sure, xenia is wierd stuff. I cannot keep the stuff alive in my tank. The water parameters are fine and everything else thrives. Some tanks just don't do well with xenia and other people would like to nuke the stuff out of their tanks. It doesn't mean that your water is bad though if it doesn't survive.

What do you have for lighting?
I have the same Xenia in 2 different tanks one 30 gallon with 2x65 PCs and the Xenia is about 10" below the bulb in moderate flow and it does not pulse.
When I set up my 125 with 3x175 Mh I took some of the xenia out of the 30 gallon and put it in the 125 and it was pulsing like crazy in about an hour.
So....
It grows good under PC's but doesn't pulse.
Its grows like a weed under metal halides and pulses
The same water is used in both tanks.

I got the stuff for free so if it does not make it at least I didn't pay for it. Also got a toadstool the same day and it opened up fully after 15 minutes in the tank.

I'm not sure all xenia pulses. I had what I believe was a non-pulsing variety - grew like a weed but never saw anything pulse. This was with 440 watts of VHO and 2 x 175 watt MH.

I recently got a few small batches from Premium Aquactics (best service, people, goods, and 10 min away from me :) ) and threw them in my 29 gallon to give them a try. I have 65 watt pc's , the xenia closer to the light is fully out and doesn't pulse, a smaller patch further away from the light (midtank level) took a couple days but pulses rapidly now. The one not pulsing seems to get a little bit more flow. Go figure...People say they love light and flow. HRRRMMMM

I have heard they like a higher ph as opposed to a lower. Don't quote me on that, just what I heard.

Thats true maybe its not the pulsing kind. I looked them up and they do look all alike! Could be?

I know they are the pulsing type, I'll just move them around and see if they like a different spot.

hmmm, interesting.

I have some for 2 weeks, in a month old 20 gall long. Under 2x28 watt pcs. They are pulsing, growing and spreading!

weird stuff,

Sometimes the addition of iodine will help getting the Xenia pulsating again. Test your iodine levels, and add a timed release iodine...this should help them:)

I have xenia in my tank-boy have I got it, I'm having to give the stuff away, anyway I add iodine and magnesiam to the tank each week and it seems to thrive on it.

do you add iodine and magnesium without testing for it? What do you use? How do you dose, by the instructions?
Just curious,
Todd

The only person so far to mention iodine levels/xenia.

Although i suppose there are arguments for and against the use of iodine dosing and xenia,i believe it works personnally, but only use the chelated source and test regularly for iodine in your system..

I use a sustained release in my 30 gal tank. I add 1/2 cap per week as per the recommendations...and all of my corals seem to like it (especially the xenia which are spreading like weeds).

If the xenia has stopped pulsing but are otherwise ok and your other water parameters are ok - I suspect that if you check you will find that your PH is 8.1 or less. Slowly raise your PH to 8.3 and they will start pulsing again.
