View Full Version : refractometer question
just calibrated new captive purity refractometer. a lot sweeter than a hydrometer. where the blue and white seperate, it's supposed to be on a slant, not straight, right???

The color change on mine is straight across. It lines up with the graduated lines on the scale. I have the Acquamarine. Mine has a "clamp" on the bottom front. maybe yours got twisted ? You might contact where you bought it..
anybody w/ a captive purity??

All refractometers I have seen read straight across. Mine does also but mine is from DIYreef.com. I thought most had the same internal workings. I'll tag along to find out more.
on mine if it is supposed to go straight across then they have a salinity of 1.000 = 0%. that don't seem right.
Seems right to me ... mine reads straight across ... 1.000 SG or 0 ppt ... I'm using the one from Premium Aquatics -- they're awesome btw !! :)

Here is a pic of what it looks like. Refractometer (http://www.patent.org.cn/rhs-10atc.htm)
oh yeah, duh. i wonder if i can loosen screw at end and turn. i don't know if that will do anything. does anyone w/ this refractometer know? i had this thing for 2 weeks and wait until 2 days before tank goes up to calibrate it.
If it's not in a straight line, I'd have to assume it was either made poorly or dropped or something. If I were you, I'd try to swap it out with whoever I ordered it from.
i ordered it from marine depot. it was packaged good and was never dropped. i mixed half of cup of crystal seas salt w/ distilled water which should have read 1.023 and the white met the blue but lines were on a slant. i guess i should return and not use it like that. now i;m going to have to start tank w/ hydrometer.
Sorry DMK, didn't mean to suggest that you had dropped it ... I was thinking more along the lines of it was dropped before it got to you. Perhaps it just came off the assembly line in bad shape? What you can try to do until you get it replaced is calibrate the SG side as best you can and then use that to calibrate your hydrometer. Just a thought.
