The main advantages of a sump is that it provides a place to place your equipment (skimmer, heaters, probes, etc.) and it provides some extra water volume to your system. Main disadvantage are the plumbing issues associated with it.

It also allows you to use equipment that you can't really hang off the back of your tank, such as a BIG skimmer, topoff system, external water pumps, etc. You generally have more equipment options with a sump.

I've got a 125g with no sump and let me tell you, it doesn't look as aesthetically pleasing as I'd like and it's a P.I.T.A. My next tank (600g+) will definitely have a sump.
If you're thinking of doing a tank without a sump, please rethink that decision.
