Well I am looking for suggestions on a valve that would be between my return line and my water pump. Any suggestions? Gate? Ball?

Ball valves will work just fine on a return pump.
Ball valve= cheap, hard to make fine adjustments.
Gate valve= about 3x the cost but makes small adjustments a breeze.

Is it cheaper to buy flexible tubing online or locally?

HI,

I have order from here 5 times with no problems.

I also think its easier to order online, then try to find all the sizes from a spa company.

You have to order in 5 foot increments

They don't sell hose barbs do they? I didn't see any. I 'll need two more hose barbs, two 90 hose barbs, a valve, and some hose.

My local Home Depot sell the hose and the fittings.
I would think it would be cheaper than buying online and paying shipping.

What is the difference in flex pvc verses v. hose? Should I use a union ball valve or not? My design is a submersible pump to the ball and then to a scwd. Is it better to use a gate valve on the outlet from the main into my fuge?

See THIS (http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=168265) thread.

If you want to be able to precisely control the flow, go with a gate valve. Ball valves are not good at controlling the flow. They are better for on/off applications.

I find my ball valves on my refugium lines, retrn line, and tank to sump line, almost impossible to dial in well. I should have used gate valves for sure. That is why my next DIY uses only them:cool:
