The Workhorse ballast is designed to be mounted in the light fixture with the lamps. Its recommended to keep the wires as short as possible with that ballast for reliable lamp starting. If you use a metal reflector and ground it that will act like a starting aid.

The Longhorse ballast is designed to start lamps reliably up to 20 feet away.

People have been remote mounting Workhorse ballasts without problems. I personally wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Hope that helps

I called them Fulham awhile back and they said that they no longer carried the longhorse considering the workhorse can be mounted remotely with no problems like the longhorse.
